MOSCOW MONUMENTS OF AVANT-GARDE ARCHITECTURE: RESTORATION AND ADAPTATION
20.04.2020
Constructivism, well known and admired by many foreign researchers, gradually starts to come back to Russian architectural discourse. Following numerous publications and exhibitions Moscow citizens as well as tourist across the country began to take interest in the architectural heritage of the epoch, where Russian architects, painters, writers and cinematographers laid foundation for contemporary mediums of art and made major contribution to the world culture of the 20th century.
Along with an increasing passion for Soviet Avant-garde buildings a lot of general questions had been raised: how to perform their restoration and what has to be preserved? In order to adapt constructivist buildings to modern use old methods had to be replaced with new scientific approaches. Our practice was established in 1995 with the main aim to prepare restoration project of Narkomfin building. Eventually we were given an opportunity to look into its practical aspects in the 2010s. In the last ten year we managed to formulate a specific approach to Avant-garde architecture restoration process and had a chance to apply it within three completed projects.
